The 1st National Swap Meet: For Collectors, By Collectors

Collectors unite for the biggest gathering of all kinds in the country! Mark your calendars and get ready for the 1st National Swap Meet: For Collectors, By Collectors that will be happening on August 25-27, 2017 at Function Halls 1-3, SMX Aura, City of Taguig.

The event will be showcasing a vast display of various collectibles like toys, action figures, antiques, vintage items, books, prints, and unique curiosities await serious collectors and hobbyists for purchase, swap or auction. Other than that, an exciting program of activities provides entertainment, fun and games, while various talks and workshops provide gainful information and new ideas in the world of collecting as a hobby. Because of these, the venue becomes an ideal rendezvous for collectors meeting other collectors of similar interests.

The best part? The Philippine Toy Groups Association will donate toys for the children of Marawi though their initiative the "Toys For Marawi." The 1st National Swap Meet exercises social responsibility through this activity by aiming to address the pressing need for mental stimulation and psychological healing for the children traumatized by the ongoing conflict in Marawi.

The Philippine Star reports that according to Vice Gov. Haroun Al-Rashid Lucman of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), trauma therapists have recommended the distribution of toys to children now in cramped conditions at evacuation centers. “There are non-government organizations and peace-advocacy groups that can help us out on this. Any help shall be highly appreciated,” said Lucman, who is also a Maranao and ARMM’s social welfare secretary. 

 “We are knocking on the hearts of parents and children in peaceful regions to donate used toys, but not toy guns or anything of the sort,” added ARMM health secretary Kadil Sinolinding Jr. 

 Toys For Marawi donation boxes will be placed around the event area so that visitors get the opportunity to bring toys they once loved and give it new life by sharing to others. The event organizers urge everyone to help and support this cause, as even the smallest act of charity creates a ripple that impacts the greater good.

Sakroots X BDJ Passion Series: Dream To Live

It's been a while since I've last attended a BDJ event. So far this is the only one I attended this year other than the BDJ Women's Summit. When I first saw this event poster online, I didn't hesitate to sign up since I always wanted to learn how to make my own dreamcatcher. I wanted one of my own when I was a kid, but I could never find any at the malls before. Buying a dreamcatcher is easy. Learning to make one yourself? Priceless!

Fortunately, I was one of the lucky (15) fifteen Bellas to score an invite at the Sakroots X BDJ Passion Series: Dream To Live. The event was held last August 12 in The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf on 3/F, Garden Wing Area at Trinoma. The event was split into two, the first part was an inspiring talk about being ready and inspired to dream while the second part was a hands-on workshop on how to create your own dreamcatchers.

Passion Talks with Shai Lagarde

Writer, Media Producer, Youth Counselor and Style Blogger - Shai Lagarde tells us how she transformed herself from a simple province girl with huge dreams to an award winning goal-getter.

What I truly admire from her talk is how dedicated and disciplined she is in managing her time to get things done. She honest in telling us how dreams would only work if you do. For example: By "mapping" your dreams early, you won't get easily lost when you're working on it. I love the fruitful talk and I hope that I could absorb all the tips that we've learned from her.

Dreamcatcher Weaving Workshop with Alecka Eclarino

Owner of Crafterina Handmade - Alecka Eclarino spills all her trade secrets on how to weave your own dreamcatcher. The first part of the workshop was an introduction on how dreamcatchers came about. It is said that the legend of the dreamcatcher originated from the Ojibwa Tribe (Chippewa) where they believed that night is full of both good and bad dreams. When a dreamcatcher is hanged above the place where you sleep, it moves freely in the night air and catches the dreams as they drift by. The good dreams, knowing their way, pass through the opening in the center of the webbing. While the bad dreams, not knowing the way, are caught in the webbing and destroyed at the first light.

From there, we started weaving our own dreamcatchers using the supplied materials. I love how Ms. Alecka is very engaging with all her students. I swear, she assists everyone so that we could all finish our artworks together.

At first, I REALLY had a hard time doing mine because I tend to get stressed-out if my crafts aren't that "perfect". Maybe it's my perfectionist-artist-afraid-of-creating-disappointing-artworks that's annoying me but I've came to accept from Ms. Alecka that some of the imperfections do make an interesting impact on the dreamcatchers itself. That's what makes our creations unique, there's no wrong or right way of doing it... but of course you still need to get the structure right. Again, It's a bit tricky at first but I'm starting to get the hang of it.

Throughout the workshop, they were judging the best dreamcatcher (in terms of aesthetics / skill / speed) from the bunch. Here's the winning creation:

The talks didn't just leave us food for thought, we were also full from the delicious sandwiches and indulgent drinks from CBTL. The servings were so big that we had to share them, some even had theirs for take out!

All in all, it was a well-spent afternoon and I enjoyed every part of it. There was never a dull moment and I wish the workshop time was longer. Nevertheless, we got to take home a Sakroots bag with goodies like a Crafterina Handmade Kit so that we could make ours at home instead. Can't wait to start on a bigger one! Will let you ladies know how it turns out when it's done! To the dreamers out there, cheers!

Relaxation Time at Bacer Wellness Spa

The first few weeks of March came off as a surprise to me. I've been getting freelance projects from random friends and I'm enjoying every bit of it. Yes, it's a bit challenging at first. But that's how you learn! Stepping out of your comfort-zone will help you grow.

One of the most exciting freelance project that I'm handling right now is I'm rendering illustrations for a children's book for kids with Down Syndrome. It's very interesting and I can't wait for it to come out!

However, doing the illustrations means sitting long hours in front of the laptop. Sometimes sitting all day takes a toll on my body. There are instances that I've experienced spraining my hand and sharp back pains because I forget to take my breaks in between!

To help promote Cycling in general as a tool towards healthy living and to encourage everyone to get out and form a team, Giro De Pilipinas paved way in making this possible with also showcasing scenic routes of the Philippines.

Laugh Theraphy: Comedy Cartel

As they all say, laughter is the best medicine. Changing your personal routines is a little bit stressful but rewarding. I realized that all I needed was just a good laugh. Last Friday, I got a random message from my closest blogger friend Alice asking me if I want to watch Comedy Cartel perform at the Scoozi Bar in Tiara Oriental Hotel Makati. Since it's a Friday night and we haven't saw each other for ages, it can't be helped but to tag along even at the last minute. 

Something I didn't regret doing because I love the kind of humor that Comedy Cartel's comedians had to offer. Believe me, I've visited some comedy bars before and their humor was not my cup of tea. I don't know if it's just me but sometimes I just don't find it hilarious when your material consists of embarrassing other people by pointing out their flaws or belittling others. I'm not a hater but I just prefer watching Tim Tayag over Vice Ganda on any day. Nothing personal.

According to their site, Comedy Cartel is a group of professional comic artists whose aim is to expand and master the art of comedy beyond the usual definitions through the practice of the classic monologue form of standup and through sketch comedy.

There was never a dull moment as we are delightfully entertained by Chip Balbuena, Rene Cruz Jr, Sherwin Cunanan, Carlo Del Prado and Michelle Defensor.

The host for that evening is the very energetic, Rene Cruz Jr.

The very special guest, Dr. Marcelo Bong Ramirez of Jab House of Zen
shared some practical love advice that everyone could surely relate to.

Goddess For A Day: Bellydancing with Jill Ngo at Footworks Dance Studio

A few years ago, Bellydance and Yoga was something that I always wanted to take up for my PE class.
Our university offers a lot of PE classes that most people I know were surprised that I even took up Scuba Diving when I was in 2nd year.

However, I didn't get the opportunity to learn both because:
1.) EVERYONE in UP is required to have 8 units of PE in their curriculum, you have a tiny chance of securing a slot during pre-enlistments / prerogs unless you're a freshman or graduating student.
2.) I've been warned that I would have a hard time passing those classes as you need to be very flexible and dedicated in order to get a good grade. Plus, most of the classes didn't fit my schedule.

Fortunately, my prayers were heard as I got invited to a special bellydancing class for bloggers last March 22.

I'll let you in on a secret... Behold!

I got my first hand experience at Footworks Dance Studio located at the 4th floor of Elescom Building 213 Barangay Milagrosa, Katipunan Ave, Quezon City (near Katips Bar and Grillery) where they taught the basics of belly dancing like the moving around with the proper posture, breathing exercises and which parts of the body should remain static are to name a few.

Aside from Bellydancing, they also offer Zumba, Breakdance, Hiphop, Pole and Aerial (Silk / Hoops) dance classes. I'm planning to try out pole dancing in the future as I've heard that it does wonders to the core area.

The new studio is well-lit and very spacious, you could do lots of cartwheels without even bumping into anyone. It was easy to concentrate on the class as it wasn't hot even on an afternoon since they have the place air conditioned and something to shield the sun's rays.

Our teacher for the day is the very skilled premiere bellydancer Jill Ngo.
If her name sounds familiar, you've probably seen her perform as she has been mastering the craft of dancing for 20 years. What I do love about her is her quirky outgoing personality that spreads a positive energy throughout the class. She makes you feel comfortable as if there's nothing to be shy about because of her inspiring words.

As I've vaguely recalled she mentioned something in the lines of
"Bellydancing is the art of being in control of your body. Knowing you have full control of your body, that's something to be confident about."

Jill is the producer and artistic director of the biggest gathering of belly dancers in the Philippines - Bellyfest - held annually. She is also the founder and mentor of the Goddess of Bellydance, an award-winning professional belly dance troupe. Aside from spreading the love of belly dance, she is also a certified Zumba and Pilates Instructor. Jill is also certified with the American Council on Exercise (ACE), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and Rebook's JUKARI.

In the Philippines, she has choreographed for Regine Tolentino, Princess Ryan, Maja Salvador, Nikki Gil, Shaina Magdayao, Daiana Menezes, Andrea del Rosario and on shows for ABS-CBN and GMA 7.

I won't be uploading a video of me dancing anytime soon. So instead, here's a photo to make up for it. Hehehe

Accompanying Jill Ngo were some of the members of the Goddesses of Bellydance: Faye, Bianca and Lexi. The Goddesses of Bellydance is the largest and most in-demand professional bellydance group in the Philippines. The GOB have appeared in TV shows such as Eat Bulaga, ASAP, Pilipinas Win na Win, Showtime, and Wowowee. This fast-rising bellydance troupe undergoes diligent training made manifest by their synchronicity, versatility, and elegance as they move to the beat of each belly dance music.

We were also delighted to have enjoyed a glimpse of their beautiful dance moves because it's not everyday that get to witness an award winning belly dance group perform for you.

TREE TOP ADVENTURE BAGUIO: Experience the Extreme Press Conference and Tour

As the City of Pines welcomes the summer season, Tree Top Adventure will hold a press conference and media tour on March 14, 2015 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Tree Top Adventure Baguio Camp John Hay, Baguio City. The press conference aims to inform the public that if they want to experience the extreme, they might want to try out the activities at Tree Top Adventure.

Tree Top Adventure offers four unique outdoor activities divided into slow and fast paced activities. One slow paced activity is the Canopy and Funicular which is similar to the concept of a cable car, but, you’ll be seated on cable chairs in which you’ll be transferring from one station to another until you complete all eight stations. If you prefer to just walk around the area and fill your eyes with spectacular view, you could avail the Trekking and Skywalk. For the fast paced activities, Tree Top offers the Tree Drop, Silver Surfer and Superman. 

Tree Drop is the most extreme activity that Tree Top offers in which you’ll be suspended 60 feet above the ground, mission impossible style, and you’ll be falling as fast as two to three seconds. Superman, as the name implies, is a horizontal motorized zipline in which you’ll be flying back and forth, Superman style. Silver Surfer is a diagonal zipline in which you’ll be standing on a specialized platform and you’ll be gliding up and down for three cycles.

                                                      

Tree Top Adventure’s another branch, located at JEST Area Upper Mau Cubi Point, Subic Bay Freeport Zone, will also hold another press conference and ribbon cutting event on March 21, 2015 after the success of its first press conference held last February 21, 2015.

Have you ever been to a zoo that let's you get THIS close to their animals?

 
Growing up, I love watching Animal Planet and reading encyclopedias about different animals.

Call me a nerd or whatever you like but there's always a random trivia out there about animals that I would always find fascinating. Believe it or not, I could recall vague memories of me trying to memorize scientific names of them. Ugh.
No wonder I don't have a lot friends. Just kidding!

Fast forward to 2015: I still love animals and I am still a nerd..

However, I forgot every scientific name I ever tried to memorize. Lol

Last weekend I finally went to Tagaytay and visited Paradizoo and Residence Inn.

FISHES

AMPHIBIANS

I really think this Asian Box Turtle right here is fully aware that I was stalking him.

He was following me the whole time I was taking his picture. Very cute!

REPTILES

Here's a not so sexy photo of me with an Albino Burmese Python taken at the Animal Encounter.

Don't be deceived on how I make it seem easy to pose with this surprisingly heavy guy!

There were also some well camouflaged Caiman Crocodiles in the Zoo Grounds.

The extreme close up shot I posted above was the scales of this relaxed Iguana.

Either he's just sleepy or doesn't seem to mind that I was there. I'm guessing both.

ARTHROPODS

***Note: Readers with Arachnophobia might want to look away***

Most of the arthropods you'll get to see there are spiders. Mexican Fireleg, Mexican Red Rump, Chilean Rose Tarantula, Chaco Golden Knee, Mexican Red Knee, Brazilian Black and White Tarantula and Mexican Pink are to name a few.

Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. These are wingless cockroaches that you usually see being eaten at Fear Factor. I got to hold one of these during the HCP Annual Pet Fair with Rattus and apparently they aren't as repulsive as your typical American or German Cockroaches. Still wouldn't eat them though.

BIRDS

The Umbrella Cockatoo was one of my favorite creatures there. The cockatoo was very wise as this one was plotting its escape plan during the photo-ops! As for the owl below, I couldn't recall if this intimidating fellow is a Philippine Eagle Owl though.

 It was my first time to see a Cassowary in person! They are as beautiful as I could imagine from the books!

MAMMALS

Chelle, Axel and I also got to pet and feed a young Bengal Tiger at the Animal Encounter.

This is optional but they will charge an additional P50 for a photo with the Tiger.

The African Lioness was adorable! I wish I caught her rolling around on video!

This is also optional but you could take a ride on their ponies inside the zoo grounds for a minimum fee.

These fluffy rabbits were also for sale. The juvenile costs P300 per pair while the breeder costs P1,600 per pair.

Surrounding us was this breathtaking view overlooking Taal Lake.

I have yet to stitch and upload a better panoramic shot of this.

 What perfect way to savor the view? A zipline ride with your significant other or a cable car ride with the family! I tried both, the cable car was okay. The zipline on the other hand kept my heart pounding!

And to think I don't have any fear of heights!

In front of Residence Inn you will see a small playground and biking area situated in the center of a round green field. Perfect for the little kids!
